Aircrete and Modern Methods of Construction

Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) is a collective term for building techniques designed to improve efficiency and effectiveness compared with traditional construction.

Innovation has long been central to H+H, with aircrete products and systems providing solutions that support the MMC agenda through faster construction, improved productivity and greater use of pre-manufactured components.

Understanding MMC

What Are Modern Methods of Construction?

MMC describes a range of construction approaches designed to improve efficiency, quality and productivity through greater use of manufacturing, innovative products and improved site processes.

The seven categories of MMC

Category 1

Pre-Manufacturing – 3D primary structural systems.

Full volumetric 3D units like modular rooms or entire pods built in factories and assembled on-site.

Category 2

Pre-Manufacturing – 2D primary structural systems.

Flat panels like walls and roofs manufactured off-site and erected on-site.

Category 3

Pre-Manufacturing – non-systemised structural components.

Pre-manufactured individual structural elements like beams, floor cassettes, or roof cassettes.

Category 4

Pre-Manufacturing – additive manufacturing.

3D printing technologies used to create structural or non-structural components.

Category 5

Pre-Manufacturing – non-structural assemblies and sub-assemblies.

Factory-made pre-plumbed bathrooms, service risers, or packaged mechanical and electrical assemblies.

Category 6

Traditional building product-led site labour reduction and productivity improvements.

Traditional methods upgraded with advanced, high-performance materials to cut down on-site labour.

Category 7

Site process led labour reduction/productivity improvements.

Innovative on-site workflows, digital tools, and logistics management (including workface factories).

H+H and MMC

Aircrete solutions for modern construction

Category 6

Thin-Joint System

Combines speed of build with dimensional accuracy to improve productivity while retaining familiar masonry construction.

Integrated construction

Celcon System Build

Builds on Thin-Joint construction to provide an integrated package suitable for SME housebuilders, self-build projects and volume developers.

Panelised construction

Vertical Wall Panels

Storey-height aircrete panels provide a fast, panelised approach to wall construction, building on methods widely used by H+H customers across Europe.

Proven experience

Aircrete's contribution to MMC

H+H has a long track record of developing aircrete solutions that improve construction efficiency, from Thin-Joint masonry to storey-height Vertical Wall Panels.

In the decade up to 2022, H+H calculated that MMC systems based on Thin-Joint and Vertical Wall Panels had been used to build around 10,000 homes.
